Initial IDM-1731 Portable DVD Player with 7-Inch LCD Review

Bought this 3-4 years ago before Portable DVD players became really popular. (I paid like 0+ for it.) It has taken a beating from my 3 yr old..kicking it many, many times, dropping it, etc. and it just keeps going. We mostly use it in the van, but also use the plug in adapter once in awhile. We've never used the battery. It has never skipped (only if the DVD is dirty so not a player problem). The only problem we are having right now is we need a new car adapter and will order one. I bought a second player for my older DD so she can watch her own movies (a Panasonic-only because it was really cheap) so I hope that one lasts just as long. I basically just use mine in the car. There were times that it didn't cut on, but I never power it off so what we do is turn the power button off and then back on and it's good to go. We really got our money's worth.

I've had this unit for about 2 months now and have never experienced the problems I've read on this site. What I like about the player is how light and portable it is..Not only can you use it in your car while traveling but you can move it to your other TVs in your house and hook up to the audio video input on your sets and your're ready to roll!! The picture is amazingly sharp compared to some of the other players I have seen and the screen is designed for widescreen DVDs..in other words the film fits perfectly in the screen!

It comes with a car adaptor and a really nice and thin remote control that works wonderfully! I highly recommend this unit!!

I purchased this dvd player almost 2 months ago, and am very happy with my purchace.It has a great picture, good optics, good sound, but depending if there are loud noises, you may need headphones. I used my walkman headphones,and they worked just fine. I have a friend with a no name brand, and you can't basically hear it without external speakers, so this was a concern for me. The sound is suffient, at least for the size of the speakers. I can sit a good few feet away and hear it just fine. The charge lasts a really long time. Well, I never played it for more then 3 hours, but the charge still remained. Plus I always charge it up before I store it, and when I plugged the battery back on the machine after a month, it was still fully charged. It comes with a remote which is a nice feature as well. I felt it was a good choice for the money, I am happy with my purchase.

I bought this little Gem primarily so my kids would be entertained on a 3 day road trip, but now I'm the one whose addicted to it! For only 9 clearance price as a "last years model", I was blown away by the phenomenal picture quality, versatility and extreme portability of this unit. Every store in town is hawking 7" screen "BenQ? Apex? never heard of that brand before - must be a cheap chinese knockoff" models for around the same price but guess what; their screens suck compared to this baby, they are cheaply made, and they are not very small. Try fitting one in your CD/mp3 player case like I can with this one! I was able to play wma files that I downloaded, photo-disks, jpeg discs, anything I can throw at it it has played. My favorite activity right now is to watch the "extras" discs from my movie dvd's while I ride the bus into work. Highly Recommended!

I just received this player yesterday and I played around with it last night. Picture for such a small screen is not bad. All the buttons and the remote work. Played through Return of the Jedi and everything was great. If you are looking for a cheap protable then this would be it. Now as for its bad points. It is a bit loud on startup and you can hear when it skips tracks and such but not overbearing. The AC adapter gets really warm. I had it hooked up to charge the battery and unplugged it because I was afraid it would start a fire...lol. Also on the chapter screen and optoins screen the highlights are hard to see. But overall good little player...enjoy.

If you want to spend as less money as possible yet want a reasonably good DVD player, this would be a great choice. I have used it for nearly 3-4 months now. It plays everything, and plays everything exceptionally well. I don't know what the hell people are talking about when they say they hear sounds of a spaceship taking off. To me, all that is nonsense. This one is as silent as a DVD player could possibly be. No record functions. This is not a DVR. This is a DVD player. Bear that in mind before you buy it. There is no rewind/forward buttons. You can skip to the next scene or go to the previous scene. But, you cannot rewind or fast forward. In a way, that is a good thing. Rewinding and forwarding a DVD is a bad habit that spoils the quality of the DVD. You don't want to do that often anyway. It is less than 30 bucks. It looks great. Weighs almost nothing, which means it is easy to carry around. As the title of my review says, this thing is worth the money.

I got this player because it was the only high end player that I could find that supported +R and +RW formats which I use on my computer when converting home video. The screen is very nice and the battery life should be excellent. There are two problems with it that I can see from a user point of view. Neither is a showstopper but they are surprising misses from a company with Sony's experience.

One is that the remote gives you no way to adjust the volume. You have to use the volume on the side of the machine. You also need the remote to fast forward thru part of the DVD. The unit has a chapter skip button but on fast forward.

Second, it is almost impossible to tell when the battery is done charging. The charging indication is displayed on a small LCD panal on the front edge of the machine. It is almost unreadable unless the light is very strong. It is a pain to figure out what the charge is on the battery and if it is done or not.

If you are looking for a good, large screen portable DVD player with good battery life, this is a good choice but a few poor design decisions keep it from being a great choice.

I got this as a gift for Christmas. The only problem I have is with the battery life, but most portables under 0 don't go above 2.5 hours. The screen image is pretty good for its size. Bigger screens might be better but they take up a lot more room and this fits comfortably in my bag. The other problem is really the sound, but I plan to solve that with a portable AMP and EQ. Both can be obtained for a little over each. All in all for the price its a pretty good player.

I bought this player the day it was released direct from Panasonic. This is a high quality device. Beautiful hi-rez screen, excellent build quality. The hard-wired internet connection allows you to stream youtube videos and view Pacasa slides in hi-rez. You can also playback DIVX rentals or purchased movies that you download on you PC and write to DVD. You can also update the firmware from the WEB.
I have been able to watch movies in the car with the 3 hour battery or the included 12V car adapter. I love the way the screen folds flat against the unit and then able to tilt up or down. All my friends are amazed at the high quality and the bright picture. Way to go Panasonic!!
PS, Panasonic is still trying to get me a date for the availability of the optional 6 HR. Battery.
